The step from beginners style fixed pitch heli’s to more advanced collective has traditionally been a big jump. Fixed pitch heli’s (with the exception of the new E-flite MSR) have struggled to fill this gap, as they are often equally, or more difficult to fly than a collective pitch heli. With the arrival of the E-flite Blade SR, there is finally a heli to bridge this gap.

It comes out of the box programmed to provide softer climb, pitch and roll response around the center of stick movement. This, combined with the tough, two-piece main frame and lower head speed, makes the Blade SR more forgiving and easier to master than most conventional CP helis. Plus, it’s big enough to fly outdoors even if there’s a little wind.

If you’re ready to step up from a coaxial or fixed-pitch heli, the Blade SR is the absolute best way to make that transition to collective pitch helis a successful one.

The durable and easily repairable EPO foam construction features a pusher prop layout, making the Phoenix ideally suited to novice pilots, as the motor and propeller are placed out of harms way, further increasing crash resilience.

Unlike most RTF trainers, the Phoenix features a powerful and efficient brushless motor and four blade prop, matched with a lightweight LiPo (Lithium Polymer) battery for maximum endurance.

The Phoenix features 4 channel control provided by a modern 5 channel 2.4GHz Radio system for interference free response.

The larger wingspan(1.38m) & upturned wingtips provide stability for novice pilots, while the 4 channel control & semi -symmetrical aerofoil allow you to perform more advanced manoeuvres, making this a plane you won’t outgrow in a hurry.

All these features combine to make a high quality package that’s ideal for novice and sport pilots alike, with great performance and durability.

Keilor Tyre Choice – which JConcepts products to use and when

Ray Munday – August 2009

I have been doing a lot of tyre testing at Keilor this year for JConcepts and would like to share my findings. My role as a factory driver is to do the hard work for you-hopefully saving you time and $$ while making you faster!!!

When the Keilor track has been blown off and is mostly dry, the correct compound is more important than the tread pattern. Very worn tyres of the correct compound will be better than new ones of the wrong compound. You don’t need new rubber all the time!

I recommend stocks of the following JConcepts tyres for the following conditions:
Cold + dry/swept: Bar Codes (blue compound)
Warm + dry/swept: Bar Codes (orange compound), (white compound for 2wd front)
Damp or dusty: Double Dees (green compound), Groovy 2wd front (green compound)

JC compounds refresher:
Green : super soft (similar to proline m3)
Blue: soft (slightly firmer than proline m3)
Orange: medium (similar to losi red)
White: medium/ hard (similar to losi silver)

- Bar Codes (blue compound)
Use when the track is dry, swept and cold (< 13C, but work best 8-12C) eg the last club race. They were 0.7s/lap faster than anything else in practice (which was a chilly 8C!!). Don’t use on a warm day as they will wear fast and actually grip less.

- Bar Codes (orange compound)
Use when the track is dry, swept and warm/ hot (>15C, but optimal around 20-25C). Below 20c, these need a few laps to warm up (some burnouts and slides on the warmup lap will help!). Below 15C, these will feel too hard and skaty. I have run these as slicks on a 20C day and still had fast lap times in 2w mod (some of you may remember that at a club race in May vs. Matty G).
The orange compound really suits the Keilor surface well when it us warm and abrasive.

- Double Dees (green compound)
Use when the track is damp or dusty. They will work best under 20C or so, but usually if it is warmer the track will dry out anyway. The round profile of the tyre makes it ride smoothly through bumps and the pins dig through into the base.
When the track is dry warm and swept, they will have high peak grip but feel a bit strange as the pins move around on the surface. They will wear much faster than orange bar codes in these conditions.
(At the recent ROAR nats some team drivers were making low profile flat
versions by removing a few rows of pins and re-gluing. I’ll try this soon and post results.)

2wd vs. 4wd:
The above notes refer to 2wd/ 4wd rear and 4wd front tyres. I try to use the same compound f+r on 4wd.

With 2wd, I often use a firmer front compound when it is really grippy. When warm, I usually run white compound bar codes on the front as this smooths out the steering. When it is really cold, I will still run blue fronts.
Alternatives: losi taper pins. These work well but have a much lower tread height which means more wear and they also lose grip with any dust on the track.
I very rarely use ribs at Keilor as they make the car hook, but if it is damp or very dusty I will use JC Groovys. If it is warm and dusty, Bar Codes will work. At the ROAR nats, they were using cut down Double Dees for the front and I will be trying that soon as well…

Inserts (note: I forgot to add this initially, edited 22/8)
The inserts that come with JC tyres (the And-1 foams) are quite firm and as long as you have the correct compound, should work fine. However, I have found that when the track is grippy, 2-stage inserts (cut to 45mm width) help stabilise the car through the bumpy corners – they stop the tyre from rolling over and the rims digging into the ground. When the track has been recently rolled it isn’t an issue. I would say that this is a tuning option rather than a necessity.

Truck:
For truck, basically follow the 4wd recommendations. I haven’t had a chance to run my truck at Keilor but at Wodonga I ran holeshots when the track was moist and bar codes when it was dry. I hope to do some truck testing at Keilor soon.

Other tracks:
Keilor is very hard and abrasive compared to a lot of tracks, therefore a harder compound is required. You may find the compounds are suitable at higher temperatures at other tracks (eg Blue may be suitable up to 20C at a track like Wodonga).

Actual lap times:
I’ve attached some lap time results from the last club race at Keilor. It was a very cold day. Note how much faster the Blue Bar codes were when it was very cold – they were amazingly good when it was really cold, but they didn’t get faster as the day warmed up. The Orange Bar Codes started to work at 13-14C, and will get much better as it warms up further, but were really slow at 8C. Double Dees were consistent across the temperature range but started to wear at 15C.

Keep an eye on the weather and the track!!

Biggest tip from all this? Keep an eye on track and weather conditions, choose the appropriate tyre compound and you will be faster!

The Scanner from Phoenix is a low wing sport trainer that has become our most popular nitro club trainer.

You might be suprised to see the words “low wing” and “trainer” together here. The Scanner acheives the same stability as a high wing aircraft though the use of diheadral, the upwards crank of the wings. Combined with a semi-symetrical aerofoil and quality construction, the net result is a versatile aircraft that is stable enough for ab initio training, yet on higher rates is a capable sport plane that will lend itself to some nice basic aerobatics. Sturdy tricycle landing gear makes takeoff and landing a breeze

The Scanner allows you to progress from your first circuits of the field, to more advanced manouvres with the same plane, and as such has become a favorite of students and instructors alike.

Just add a .46 size engine such as the OS MAX-46 LA and your choice of 4+ channel radio system & four standard servos. The Spektrum DX7 2.4GHz computer radio comes complete with 4 digital servos. For the budget conscious the Spektrum DX5e 2.4GHz radio & receiver, and four servos such as the Futaba S3003 will do nicely.

Maitland Offroad Model Car Club was host to the 2010 King of the Valley Nitro Offroad race meeting on February 21st.

New XRAY driver Ari Bakla has had a flying start to the 2010 Racing Season. Qualifying 3rd in Buggy and TQ in Truggy. Ari finished in 1st place for both Buggy and Truggy after the 30min A-Main. New XRAY Australia recruites Justin Snape and KC Shore had a strong A-Main performances too finishing 6th and 7th respectivly.

XRAY cars had the fastest individual lap times and overal race times for the whole event.Racers say the track was ” Grooved ” with nice cosistent grip. This was a single day race meeting starting the 2010 year off with a strong presence of racers supporting the rebuilding club. erfect 30 degree days help the case too. 3 Qualifiers were run with 30 Minute A-Main finals.

International Shoot out 2010 – Race Report.

We arrived at the Sunshine Coast track Friday afternoon for the practice session, due to the number of people the organisers decided to run controlled practice based on the heats for the actual event itself. Everyone would get a minimum of 2 runs to get their set up right for qualifying on Saturday.

Saturday Morning.

Round 1
Buggy was up first and with the likes of Matt Griffin, Josh Pain, Jason Dyckhoff, Kylie McBride, Zac Ryan and the man himself Renaud Savoya we knew that it we would have to be on our game……

Aaron looked really good in the warm up and was really happy with the Proline Caliber m3’s. Showing great speed Aaron qualified 3rd overall after the first round of qualifying with only Renaud Savoya and Jason Dyckhoff in front of him.

Next up was Truggy, however, a steering servo died on us in the warm up and that was us done for.

Unfortunately, after just completing the first round of qualifying the heavens opened up on us and racing was cancelled for the rest of the day.

Sunday – Finals Day
We were sitting pretty in Buggy (3rd position outright), but had a long haul back in Truggy (Q 30th in Truggy).

Truggy C was up first and we were at the back of the pack. After a frantic start Aaron was in first place by the end of lap 1 closely followed by Klye Mcbride (another bad qualifier) Aaron and Kyle settled into a race of 2 and in the end Kyle sneaked in the win with Aaron second.

Truggy B was our next hurdle and once again after a furious first lap Aaron was in the lead and followed by Kyle and the battled again for first and second with Aaron happliy taking second spot after a near miss with a back maker.

Truggy A-Main Final.
This was it we had worked our way to the A-Main!! However, the top 3 seemed along way ahead of us on the start long (we were in 12th spot), but we knew we had 30 mins to work our way up to the front of the pack. The hooter sounded and 15 truggies launched down the front straight, Aaron had another great start and by lap 1 was in fourth place. The battle was really on from that point and the top four (Aaron, Kylie McBride, Jason Dyckhoff and Renaud Savoya) were in a tight battle.

By the half way mark Renaud had pulled a small lead, with the other 3 in a tight battle. With 5 mins to go Aaron was in first spot and being chased by the pack. It came down to the last lap with Aaron holding onto first place by just under 2 seconds over Jason Dyckhoff and Renaud Savoya third

Buggy - A Main Final
With only a 10 min break it was into the Buggy warm up. Before we knew it eh hooter had gone off and we were racing. Aaron got a great start and was in second place after lap 1. It came down to a battle of 5 (Renaud Savoya, Matt Griffin, Jason Dyckhoff, Kyle Mcbride and Aaron) as they cleared away from the pack. Around the 15min mark the leading pack came up onto the back markers, unfortunately Aaron was taken out by one of them and while the car was still running we were falling back from the leaders.

Several minutes later we were out when the dog drive came out of the front diff (we later discovered that the bearing had failed from the impact with the back maker)

Overall the Proline Caliber M3 tires performed faultlessly from 35 degree heat to blue groove and in the wet the Proline Holeshot M3’s were the tire of choice.

We now a preparing for the National Buggy Titles next month

Cheers
Mark and Aaron Stringer

The 1/8 8IGHT 2.0 Buggy Race Roller features over thirty enhancements to the revolutionary 8IGHT. Improvements include a longer chassis with Tuned Flex Technology, lightened shock towers, a sure-close fuel tank, heavy duty dogbones and outdrives, a new rear hub design and more. At the 2008 IFMAR 1/8 Buggy World Championships the 8IGHT 2.0 Buggy proved to be the fastest buggy in qualifying taking Top Qualifying honors.

At a Glance

The 1/8-scale 8IGHT 2.0 4WD Buggy Race Roller features over thirty revisions and improvements to the revolutionary 8IGHT buggy chassis. The 8IGHT 2.0 Buggy proved to be the fastest buggy in qualifying by taking Top Qualifying honors at the 2008 IFMAR 1/8 Buggy World Championships.

The chassis on the 8IGHT 2.0 has been extended an additional 2mm to provide increased stability and speed. The chassis’ Tuned Flex Technology provides significant handling gains by responding precisely to changes in the terrain without sacrificing balance and grip. Steel chassis droop stops have also been added to ensure consistent down stop settings.

The 8IGHT 2.0 includes updated steering geometry which features a servo saver with increased consistency. Additional gains in steering precision were made by incorporating a pressed-steel bushing in the Ackerman brace, which reduces friction over the entire range of motion. The suspension on the 8IGHT 2.0 allows for customization with numerous shock mounting locations, two camber link positions on the front carrier and four on the rear.

A revised radio tray on the 8IGHT 2.0 optimizes the position of the servos, while increasing response time and reducing stress on the throttle servo. The Sure-Close fuel tank ensures positive closure and prevents air from entering the fuel system.

The 8IGHT 2.0 features high-quality 7075 aluminum shock towers that reduce weight for improved on-track performance without sacrificing handling or strength. The dogbones and outdrives of the 8IGHT 2.0 feature improved steel materials to withstand the abuse of competitive racing. The rear hub design incorporates an updated inner camber link, a revised shock tower and simplified camber locations and the durability of 3.5mm outer rear hinge pins.

The rear gear box on the 8IGHT 2.0 has the capability to shim the rear ring gear from the pinion to ensure ultra free drivetrain. Also included on the 8IGHT 2.0 is a left-side keyed insert to improve durability.

Loving the truck… can’t seem to get enough…

Finally, you can now have Team Associated’s world-class performance with true scale authenticity in a 1:10 scale ready-to-run electric truck! Team Associated is proud to bring to you the SC10, a 1:10 scale electric 2WD off road, authentic short course race-truck that is ready-to-run.

Based on the 6-time ROAR Nationals-winning RC10T4, the engineers behind the doors in Area 51 made the SC10 both all show and all go!

The SC10 comes ready-to-run with a factory finished short course race-truck body, short course style wheels and aggressive tread multi-terrain tires, all which have been designed to look just like the full-size race trucks that run in short course off-road series around the country. The world of high-performance 1:10 scale electric R/C has never before seen this level of scale accuracy! At first glance it’s easy to see that the SC10 is another champion by design!

Novak’s next-generation Ballistic motors have entered the crawling field. The high-performance Ballistic Crawler Brushless Motors – 18.5T (#3618) and 21.5T (#3619) coupled with Novak’s impressive Goat 3S Crawler Brushless/Brush ESC are expected to be two of the most sought after brushless crawling systems on the market. Because of their extreme versatility, the Goat 3S Crawler Brushless Systems – 18.5T (#3028) and 21.5T (#3029) can tackle all crawling conditions with a simple stator switch. Because the crawler-specific hardware is located outside of the hand-wound stators, drivers can replace the stators at any time to properly combat any type of terrain or course. The Goat 3S Systems also have the ability to run on either two or three-cell Li-Po batteries via Novak’s auto-detect software. Additionally, one of the three profiles is specific for worm-drive vehicles, which do not require electronic drag brakes.

HIGH-LEVEL SPEED CONTROL
The Goat 3S’s completely programmable interface is preset to excel in any crawler rig, whether it be worm-drive or standard vehicles. Simply install it, push the One-Touch button and the Goat 3S will easily maneuver through any terrain. The powerful speed control also comes equipped with instant reverse via Novak’s Zero Reverse Delay, which provides immediate power delivery in both forward and reverse directions. Additionally, the Goat 3S’s third profile features a fully programmable brushed motor option to allow for motor experimentation. But the versatility doesn’t end there, attach a non-crawling Ballistic motor and the Goat 3S will operate the same as Novak’s speedy Havoc 3S with forward, brake and reverse settings. The Goat 3S also includes everything necessary to operate, including a cooling fan for additional airflow and an external high-voltage three-amps switching regulator to provide six volts of output without overheating the speed control.

HIGH-END CRAWLER MOTOR
And like all Novak Ballistic motors, the Ballistic Crawlers contain heavy-duty solder tabs and a removable nine-inch shielded sensor harness. And by taking advantage of the Ballistics’ interchangeable wound stator construction, crawlers can simply replace the installed 18.5 or 21.5-turn stator for any available stator between 13.5 and 21.5 turns. The motors are also equipped with a custom-silicone gasket seal to keep dirt and debris from damaging the motors’ sensor plug. The Ballistic Crawler motors also include a Crawling Sintered Tuning Rotor – 14mm (#5950). The rotor’s large diameter and exclusive magnetic material provide the motors with more torque and stronger braking. It also increases natural drag braking and improves the motors’ initial throttle response, providing more control on steep climbs and downhill descents.
